Community Service Fund Update

The Class of 1980's
Community Service Fund has made a gift of $10,000 to the Pace Center.  The Pace Center, which includes the Student Volunteers Council, is the central organization on campus that focuses on community service, volunteer work and internships for Princeton students.  Our gift will support three mid-term break trips ("Breakout Princeton") for approximately 40 students (this spring, there will be a total of 7 trips offered for approximately 90 students).  Each trip is organized by two student leaders with the assistance of a student coordinator, with administrative support from the Pace Center.  The trips that our gift will support are in the following locations:
  • Whitesburg, Kentucky: Students will learn about Appalachian culture and the coal mining industry and will partner primarily with Appalshop, a documentary and cultural preservation organization in Whitesburg, and also citizens advocacy groups such as Mountain Justice.
  • New Jersey: The Dynamics of Immigration trip will work with community partners locally, such as RISE and El Centro, as well as in Jersey City and other parts of the state.
  • Boulder, Colorado: Breakout participants will work with Yoga World Reach and Yoga Ed to better understand how yoga practice and principles of nonviolence can be used to address personal and community traumas including domestic violence, childhood obesity, homelessness, and disability.
Breakout Princeton provides opportunities for students to learn about and take action on important public issues with a group of their peers through week-long community immersion trips in the US. The trips are preceded by a series of related sessions designed to prepare students for their immersion experience. While in their host communities, students volunteer with local organizations, meet with leaders and gain an on-the-ground understanding of a particular public issue. When feasible, student participants connect with local alumni. After each trip, participants share what they have learned and accomplished with the University community and discuss ways to stay involved.  We hope to have a photo display with other information about the trips at our headquarters site during Reunions.

Kiki Jamieson, the Class of 1951 Director of the Pace Center, expressed her appreciation to the Class of 1980 for our generous gift.  Please also see the accompanying letter from President Shirley Tilghman who thanked us for the gift as well.

Your class officers thank the many class donors to the Community Service Fund for allowing the class to make a meaningful gift that will have a positive impact on student's learning at Princeton.
